Women visit their doctor during these first months are ordered to have a complete blood count done as well as a general antibody screen for HDN. These women also learn the blood type of their child. They are screened for rubella, syphilis, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, chlamydia, tuberculosis, cervical cancer, and HIV. The second trimester involves another set of tests. Doctors will often order a genetic screening for Down syndrome. They also perform either an abdominal or a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the baby, amniotic fluid, placenta, and cervix.

During the third trimester, a woman and her fetus go through another round of tests. Doctors will test women for group B streptococcus and gestational diabetes.
